The Definitive Handbook: Welcoming a New Cat into Your Home
In celebration of Adopt a Shelter Cat Month (which, in our opinion, should be observed every month), our team aims to make the transition of bringing a new cat into your home as smooth as possible. Cats are delicate creatures, and entering a new environment can be overwhelming, especially if other animals have already established their territory.
If you’re preparing to bring home a new cat (or even multiple cats), follow these expert tips from our team to ensure a warm and welcoming experience.
#1: Establish a secure space for your new cat
It may take several days for your new cat to feel comfortable around you, and even longer if you have other pets in the household. Help your cat settle in by providing them with their own designated area. Set up a spacious room with their litter box, food and water bowls, scratching post, and bedding. This way, they won’t have to compete with other pets for essential resources. Spend ample time playing, petting, and interacting with your new feline companion to help them become familiar with your presence. However, also allow them uninterrupted time to explore and adjust at their own pace.
#2: Maintain their current diet
The stress of moving to a new environment can upset a cat’s sensitive digestive system. To minimize further stress, continue feeding them the same food they were accustomed to. If you intend to switch their diet, give them a few days to settle in before gradually transitioning to the new food over the course of a week.
#3: Allow your new cat time to acclimate
Your new cat may require a week or two to fully acclimate to their new home. Therefore, hold off on introducing them to family and friends until they are comfortable with you and their surroundings. However, it’s essential to schedule a visit with your regular veterinarian for a meet-and-greet and to ensure your new cat is healthy and up to date on preventive care. Keep in mind that another trip soon after their journey to your home can be stressful, so wait another week before any additional introductions.
Congratulations on the newest addition to your family! Our team is eager to meet your new furry friend, so please give us a call to schedule their wellness visit.
